2026-'27 Micro-School Information

Guiding Philosophy

Children are not empty vessels to be filled. They are curious, capable and already carrying genius within them. When learning is reduced to compliance, curiosity dims. When it is honored and guided, it expands.

In our micro-school, adults do not control learning, instead we design the conditions for it. We act as guides, not directors, creating meaningful opportunities that lead children toward discovery, ownership and deep engagement. Self-guided learning builds confidence, responsibility and lasting investment, while clear boundaries provide the structure children need to thrive.

Education should intentionally develop independence, responsibility and a strong sense of agency. Learners are guided to take ownership of their work, their choices and their role within the community. Struggle and challenge are embraced as essential parts of growth and children are supported through productive discomfort rather than rescued from it. Progress is measured through mastery, reflection and meaningful feedback rather than comparison. Our goal is not simply academic competence, but the development of confident, capable learners who see themselves as active participants in their own learning and contributors to the world around them.

Literacy

Reading is not a natural process. It is a complex code and like all codes, it must be taught. We ground our literacy instruction in neuroscience and the science of how the brain learns to read, recognizing that strong literacy foundations are essential to lifelong learning, confidence and independence.

In our micro-school, literacy is taught directly, explicitly, and in a carefully sequenced order. We do not ask children to guess, infer or discover reading on their own. Instead, we provide systematic instruction that builds skills intentionally and cumulatively. Through multi-sensory learning experiences that engage the brain and body, children develop deep, durable reading skills.

Literacy is the one area in which we intentionally do not rely on discovery-based learning. Until a child demonstrates strong reading fluency and comprehension, literacy instruction remains human-led, direct and explicit. This structure is not restrictive; it is foundational. Mastery of reading is what ultimately allows children to access independence, self-guided learning and deeper exploration across all other areas of learning. When literacy instruction is aligned with how the brain works, children do not just learn to read. They become readers.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)

STEM learning is rooted in discovery. Children learn best in these subjects when they are invited to explore, question, test and think deeply about how the world works. We approach science, technology, engineering and mathematics through inquiry-based learning that sparks curiosity and creates meaningful opportunities for exploration.

In mathematics, we believe strong understanding begins with the number system and place value. Mathematical learning must progress from concrete, hands-on experiences to abstract thinking, honoring each child’s readiness and willingness to engage. By building concepts intentionally and allowing ideas to unfold through exploration and guided practice, children develop true understanding rather than memorization. STEM learning in our micro-school is designed to cultivate curiosity, confidence and flexible thinking, forming the foundation for innovation and problem solving.

Technology and Learning

We recognize that artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool in education when used thoughtfully and with intention. At the same time, we believe foundational skills must be firmly in place before technology becomes a central part of learning. Children need strong cognitive, academic and problem-solving foundations before relying on digital tools to support their work.

In our micro-school, technology is introduced gradually and purposefully. Students move at their own pace and decisions about when and how to incorporate AI are guided by each child’s readiness, independence and skill development. By prioritizing human thinking, deep understanding and developmental readiness, we ensure technology enhances learning rather than replacing it.

Behavior and Community

Our community is grounded in respect, responsibility and belonging. We expect learners to treat one another with grace, courtesy, and care, and to act as contributing members of a shared community. Every child has a role in maintaining a safe, welcoming and respectful environment.

We honor individual beliefs and values, including differences in politics and religion. No particular viewpoint is promoted or imposed. What is non-negotiable is how we treat one another. Bullying is not tolerated. Belonging is essential.

Adults lead by example and guide behavior with clarity and consistency. Children are supported in developing self-advocacy, emotional awareness and accountability for their choices. When mistakes occur, redirection and reflection are used to promote growth rather than punishment. Through shared ownership of our space and learning, we cultivate empathy, integrity and the skills needed to participate fully and responsibly in a community.

Our Founding Community

This microschool is being built with care and intention. While our core philosophy and instructional values are clearly defined, we recognize that meaningful learning communities evolve over time. We seek families who are willing to partner with us in shaping a school that grows thoughtfully and responsibly.

This environment is best suited for families who trust the learning process and the developmental timeline of childhood. We value families who allow children the time they need to grow, the freedom to explore their interests and the opportunity to take risks and learn through failure. Learning does not follow a single path or always take a traditional form, and meaningful growth often unfolds in unexpected ways.

As our community develops, we will continue to reflect, adapt, and refine our practices in service of the children we support. This includes remaining open to rethinking structures, including time and scheduling, when it best supports learning. Building something meaningful requires trust, flexibility, patience, and a shared commitment to growth.
